Navratri Day 4: Worship of Maa Kushmanda – The Radiant Creator of the Universe
April 2, India: The fourth day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Maa Kushmanda, the fourth manifestation of Goddess Durga. Known as the radiant cosmic creator, Maa Kushmanda is revered as the source of universal energy, having created the universe with her divine smile.
The name Kushmanda is derived from three Sanskrit words: Ku (little), Ushma (warmth or energy), and Anda (cosmic egg), signifying “the one who created the universe as a cosmic egg with her warmth and smile.”
She is often depicted with eight arms holding weapons, a rosary, and a jar of nectar, riding a lion which represents fearlessness and strength. Her form radiates the glow of the sun, and she is believed to reside in the core of the solar system, governing energy and vitality.
According to Hindu mythology, before the universe came into existence, there was complete darkness. Maa Kushmanda’s smile lit up the void and initiated creation, making her the originator of all life and cosmic order.
She is said to have created Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, and assigned them their respective roles in sustaining the universe. Her energy sustains the sun, and she is also credited with providing light and direction to all life forms.
In this form, she bestows intellect, strength, and spiritual enlightenment to her devotees. She also removes sorrow, disease, and negativity, replacing them with joy, health, and positive energy.
On this day, devotees worship Maa Kushmanda with jasmine flowers, kumkum, and fruits like pumpkins (considered especially auspicious for her). Many also observe fasts and chant mantras like:
“ॐ देवी कूष्माण्डायै नमः”
(Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah)
It is believed that worshipping her improves one’s health, wealth, and strength, and grants relief from all ailments and sorrows.
Maa Kushmanda represents the core spiritual light that dispels ignorance and darkness. As the Adi Shakti, she is both the creator and nurturer, symbolizing that even a gentle smile has the power to birth an entire cosmos.
As Navratri progresses into its fourth day, the worship of Maa Kushmanda inspires us to embrace light over darkness, creation over destruction, and faith over fear. Her blessings are said to be especially potent for those seeking new beginnings, clarity, and energy in their lives.
As we light the lamps and chant her name, we are reminded that even the smallest ray of divine grace can illuminate the entire universe.
