Neeraj Chopra Wins Gold in Inaugural NC Classic 2025 on Home Soil with 86.18m Throw

India’s golden boy clinches top spot in the first-ever international javelin tournament held in the country, beating Kenya’s Julius Yego and Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage in Bengaluru.

Bengaluru, July 5:
Neeraj Chopra has once again etched his name into Indian athletics history by winning the first-ever international javelin competition hosted in India, the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025, held at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru.

Amid gusty conditions, Chopra delivered a best throw of 86.18 metres on his third attempt to seal gold in this World Athletics-certified gold-level event. The victory comes with added emotional weight, as Neeraj performed in front of his family and home crowd.

“It was mentally tough for me because I know everyone had their eyeballs on me. My entire family is here, so I was nervous about that too,” said Chopra post-victory.

  • Silver went to Kenya’s Julius Yego, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist, with a best throw of 84.51m.
  • Bronze was claimed by Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage, a former U-16 fast bowler, who impressed with a throw of 84.34m.

India’s Sachin Yadav narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth with 82.33m, while Yashvir Singh finished eighth at 79.65m.

Brazil’s Luiz Mauricio da Silva took 7th place (80.31m), and USA’s Curtis Thompson ended in 6th with 81.50m.

With his latest triumph, Chopra not only delighted home fans but also laid the foundation for what could become an annual international athletics showpiece in India. While the elusive 90m throw still remains just out of reach, this performance strengthens his position as a global javelin icon.

“We’re just getting started,” Neeraj hinted, as fans and athletes alike now hope the NC Classic will become a staple in the global athletics calendar.
