Nepal hails ceasefire as a step toward Middle East peace, renews plea for Bipin Joshi’s release
Kathmandu [Nepal], January 18: Nepal has welcomed the recent Gaza ceasefire agreement, describing it as a vital move toward peace and stability in the Middle East. Alongside its support for the truce, Nepal has reiterated its demand for the release of Bipin Joshi, a Nepali student held hostage by Hamas since October 2023.
“The Government of Nepal has been closely observing the unfolding of events in the Middle East since October 7, 2023. We welcome the recent announcement of the ‘Agreement for the Release of Hostages and Ceasefire in Gaza,'” Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
The Ministry expressed hope that the agreement would pave the way for lasting peace and ensure uninterrupted humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza.
Nepal’s Plea for Bipin Joshi
Bipin Joshi, an agriculture student studying in Israel under the “Learn and Earn Scheme,” was abducted during the October 7 Hamas attack. Ten other Nepali students were killed during the assault on their shelter, and many Nepali citizens have since been evacuated from Israel.
Despite international mediation efforts, there has been no update on Joshi’s condition or whereabouts. “The Government of Nepal has consistently urged the release of all hostages, including Mr. Bipin Joshi,” the Ministry added.
Nepal also expressed gratitude to mediators involved in the ceasefire and hostage negotiations, calling their efforts critical to progress.
Ceasefire Details and Phased Implementation
The ceasefire deal, approved by Israel’s security cabinet, is structured in three phases:
- First Phase: A six-week truce begins Sunday, accompanied by the release of hostages in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israel. Aid to Gaza will also increase significantly.
- Second Phase: Negotiations start on the 16th day for a permanent end to the war. Remaining hostages, including men, will be exchanged for Palestinian prisoners, and Israeli forces will withdraw entirely from Gaza.
- Third Phase: Focus on Gaza’s reconstruction and the return of remains of deceased hostages.
Health Preparations for Hostage Release
Israel’s Health Ministry has announced readiness to provide immediate medical care and psychological support for freed hostages. Officials recommend a minimum four-day hospital stay for returning captives to ensure recovery and reintegration.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that the release process could commence as early as Sunday.
