High-resolution satellite imagery shows India inflicted significant damage on key Pakistani airbases during Operation Sindoor, with little visible evidence of reciprocal Pakistani success.

May 15, 2025: India appeared to have a clear upper hand in targeting Pakistan’s military facilities during the recent four-day conflict, The New York Times reported, citing before-and-after satellite imagery. The strikes, part of India’s Operation Sindoor launched on May 7, followed the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that left 26 people dead.

According to the NYT report, while both sides engaged in high-tech warfare involving drones and missiles, the visual evidence indicated that India’s strikes were more precise and destructive—especially on Pakistani airbases and defence installations.

The report referred to India’s attacks on bases such as Bholari, near Karachi, and Nur Khan, situated close to Pakistan’s military HQ and nuclear command units, highlighting visible structural damage, especially to aircraft hangars and runways.

At Rahim Yar Khan and Sargodha airbases, satellite images confirmed India had rendered runways non-operational. A Pakistani NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) issued on May 10 also acknowledged Rahim Yar Khan’s runway closure.

By contrast, Pakistani claims of having destroyed India’s Udhampur air base were not backed by visual evidence. An NYT-reviewed image from May 12 showed no signs of structural damage to the Indian base.

In total, India reportedly struck facilities in Rafiqui, Murid, Chaklala, Sukkur, Chunian, and radar sites in Pasrur and Sialkot, using air-launched precision munitions, causing “massive damage,” as per Indian defence officials.

The four-day flare-up marked the most intense India-Pakistan military engagement in over 50 years, yet the NYT concluded that the damage appeared largely contained and primarily inflicted by India. The conflict ended with a ceasefire agreement on May 10.
