Only Conditional Ceasefire: No Shift in India's Indus Treaty Stance, Say Sources
May 10, 2025-New Delhi:“Conditional” Ceasefire: India Firm on Indus Treaty Suspension, Say Sources
India’s ceasefire agreement with Pakistan is strictly conditional and does not indicate any dilution of its ongoing diplomatic measures, including the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, top government sources clarified on Saturday.

The sources said the decision to initiate dialogue leading to the ceasefire was taken by Pakistan, not India. The Indian position remains anchored in its “zero-tolerance” approach to terrorism, reiterated multiple times by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
“There is no change in India’s policy stance. Our diplomatic posture, including the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, continues to reflect our deep concerns about Pakistan’s sustained support to cross-border terrorism,” a senior official said.

Earlier in the day, both countries announced a ceasefire following high-level DGMO talks. However, Indian officials maintained that this truce is contingent upon Pakistan’s behaviour, especially regarding terror activities emanating from its soil.
The firm tone underscores that while India is open to de-escalation, it will not compromise on national security or abandon its leverage on issues like water-sharing and cross-border diplomacy.
