OpenAI Whistleblower’s Death: Mother Alleges Murder, Calls for FBI Investigation; ‘He Had Documents’

“Suchir Balaji’s family disputes suicide claims, citing missing documents and signs of foul play.”

January 17, 2025: Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI researcher and whistleblower, was found dead in November under suspicious circumstances, sparking allegations and calls for deeper investigation.

In a sensational and deeply emotional interview with Tucker Carlson, Poornima Rao, the mother of former OpenAI researcher and whistleblower Suchir Balaji, made startling claims about her son’s death. Found dead in his San Francisco apartment in November, Suchir’s demise was initially ruled a suicide by authorities. However, his family has vehemently disputed this conclusion, alleging foul play and demanding a full FBI investigation.

Ms. Rao accused OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, of involvement in her son’s death, claiming he possessed incriminating documents about the company’s practices. “My son had documents against OpenAI. They attacked him and killed him,” she alleged. Adding to the intrigue, she said, “Some documents were missing after his death.”

Family Rejects Suicide Conclusion

Suchir’s mother dismissed the official narrative of suicide, pointing out inconsistencies in the investigation. “He celebrated his birthday a day before he died. He was happy and received gifts from his father,” she said. She further highlighted alleged signs of a struggle in his apartment, including bloodstains in the bathroom, which she said were overlooked by investigators.

The family has accused authorities of mishandling the case and suppressing crucial information. Ms. Rao shared that it took just 14 minutes for officials to declare the cause of death as suicide. “The investigation feels rushed and incomplete,” she said. In an earlier social media post, she revealed that Suchir’s apartment had been ransacked and showed evidence of a struggle.

Whistleblower Against OpenAI

Suchir Balaji, who worked at OpenAI for nearly four years, resigned in August 2023 after expressing dissatisfaction with the company’s transition to a for-profit model. He had raised ethical concerns about the implications of AI technologies and their corporate governance. Shortly before his death, he had shared these concerns in an interview with the New York Times, further highlighting issues within the AI industry.

Elon Musk, a vocal critic of OpenAI’s recent directions, shared Ms. Rao’s interview on his platform X (formerly Twitter), calling the allegations “extremely concerning.” The renewed spotlight has intensified calls for transparency and accountability within the AI sector.

Investigation Reopened

The San Francisco Police Department has reportedly reopened the case as an “active investigation,” but details remain scarce. Balaji’s family has demanded that the FBI take over the case, saying, “Only a federal investigation can uncover the truth.”
