“Our Hearts Ache for the 24 Innocent Souls”: President Biden on California Wildfires

Wildfires claim 24 lives in Los Angeles, displacing nearly 200,000; Biden vows swift federal assistance

Washington DC [US], January 14: US President Joe Biden on Monday expressed profound condolences over the loss of 24 lives in the devastating wildfires ravaging Southern California, particularly in Los Angeles.

“Our hearts ache for the 24 innocent souls we have lost in the wildfires across Los Angeles. Jill and I pray for them and their loved ones,” President Biden said in a heartfelt statement.

Federal Efforts and Pledges

President Biden acknowledged the scale of destruction caused by the fires and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing federal assistance.

“I am being frequently briefed on intensive efforts to suppress the wildfires and have directed our team to respond promptly to requests for additional federal firefighting assistance. At my direction, hundreds of federal personnel and unique federal aerial and ground support have been sent to California to support the firefighting efforts and help communities in need,” the statement read.

Biden also emphasized that his administration remains focused on aiding survivors and continuing the fight against the fires, especially with high winds forecasted to exacerbate the situation.

“My administration remains laser-focused on helping survivors, and we will continue to use every tool available to support the urgent firefight as the winds are projected to increase,” Biden added.

Acknowledging Firefighting Heroes

The President extended his gratitude to the firefighters and first responders risking their lives on the front lines.

“To the brave firefighters and first responders working day and night to suppress these fires and save lives: our nation is grateful. You represent the best of America, and we are in your debt,” he said.

Current Impact and Devastation

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the wildfire death toll has climbed to 24, with 16 individuals still unaccounted for, as reported by the New York Post.

Key details of the devastation include:

  • Most fatalities occurred in the Eaton Fire.
  • Eight lives were lost in the Palisades Fire.
  • 200,000 people displaced due to the wildfires.
  • Approximately 39,000 acres destroyed, equivalent to 2.5 times the size of Manhattan.

Looking Ahead

As the firefighting efforts continue, President Biden’s administration has vowed to ensure all necessary federal resources are mobilized to combat the wildfires and support affected communities. The President’s message underscores the nation’s collective grief and commitment to recovery during this unprecedented crisis.
