Over 1,000 Killed in Syria as Clashes as Revenge Killings Escalate
March 9, 2025: Syria is reeling from one of the deadliest outbreaks of violence in recent years, as clashes between Syrian security forces and loyalists of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, followed by revenge killings, have resulted in over 1,000 deaths, according to reports from the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The Observatory confirmed that 745 civilians—most of whom were executed at close range—were among the dead, along with 125 government security force members and 148 militants affiliated with Assad’s forces. The situation has caused electricity and water shortages in several areas, especially in Latakia.

The clashes erupted on Thursday and marked a significant escalation in Syria’s instability, just three months after insurgents removed Assad from power.
Government officials claimed that the violence stemmed from remnants of Assad’s loyalists attempting to retaliate, while critics pointed to escalating sectarian tensions between Sunni militias and Alawite groups, the latter of whom had formed the backbone of Assad’s support for decades.

On Friday, reports emerged of Sunni Muslim fighters targeting members of the Alawite sect, triggering mass executions, looting, and arson across multiple villages.
“It was horrifying—bodies everywhere, homes on fire. Many of my neighbors were killed,” said Ali Sheha, a resident of Baniyas, who managed to escape.
With thousands fleeing Syria, neighboring Lebanon has seen an influx of Alawite refugees. Lebanese lawmaker Haidar Nasser reported that many displaced families have sought shelter at the Russian airbase in Hmeimim.
Meanwhile, France has condemned the killings and urged independent investigations into sectarian atrocities.

“France condemns in the strongest terms the atrocities committed against civilians based on religious identity and against prisoners,” a French Foreign Ministry statement read.
Syria’s state media reported that security forces have “regained control” of most conflict zones, though local sources dispute these claims. Authorities have also closed major roads leading to coastal areas in an attempt to restore order.
Despite official statements, the Syrian Observatory warns that sporadic attacks are still occurring, and tensions remain high.
As the world watches, Syria faces one of its most perilous moments since the start of the civil war in 2011—a conflict that has already left millions displaced and hundreds of thousands dead.
