Over 900 Earthquakes Jolt Japan’s Tokara Islands, Residents Sleepless and Anxious

Seismic swarm shakes remote island chain in southern Japan, prompting fears, sleepless nights, and emergency readiness amid quake rumors.

July 3, 2025: Tokara Islands, Japan – A relentless wave of seismic activity has rattled the southern Japanese Tokara island chain, with over 900 earthquakes recorded in just two weeks, leaving residents sleepless and on edge.

The tremors began on 21 June, and reached a notable peak on Wednesday with a magnitude 5.5 quake. Though there have been no reports of damage or tsunami warnings, local authorities have advised residents to remain prepared for possible evacuation.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency described the activity around the islands as “very active,” warning that the frequency of tremors—though not unprecedented—was highly unusual.

“It’s very scary to even fall asleep. It feels like it’s always shaking,” a local resident told regional broadcaster MBC. Others echoed similar anxiety. “You can hear a strange roar from the ocean before the quakes hit, especially at night. It’s eerie,” said Chizuko Arikawa, who lives on Akusekijima island and runs a cattle farm.

About 700 residents live across seven of the 12 islands in the Tokara chain. Some of the islands have no hospitals, with the nearest medical facility located six hours away by ferry in Kagoshima, the prefectural capital.

Isamu Sakamoto, head of the local residents’ association, described the sensations as physically sickening: “The quakes start with a jolt from below, then the house sways.”

The municipality of Toshima, under which the Tokara Islands fall, reported that residents are suffering from sleep deprivation, and have asked media outlets to refrain from excessive contact. Several guesthouses have halted tourist bookings, reserving space for potential emergency shelters.

Amid the tremors, rumors of a massive impending quake have spread across the country—fueled by an eerie prediction in a 1999 manga by artist Ryo Tatsuki, which claimed that a devastating quake would strike on 5 July 2025. Though dismissed by experts, the speculation has spooked tourists, leading to trip cancellations.

Japan, located on the seismically volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences about 1,500 earthquakes annually. While most are minor, the nation remains haunted by the memory of devastating quakes—like the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which claimed over 18,000 lives.

Officials continue to warn of the “big one,” a megaquake that could leave over 300,000 people dead, urging stronger disaster preparedness, new embankments, and better evacuation infrastructure.
