Shehbaz Sharif Vows to Defeat India, Faces Online Backlash
February 24, 2025: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has stirred controversy with a bold proclamation that his name will cease to exist if Pakistan fails to surpass India in economic growth and development. The statement, made during a fiery speech in Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab, has sparked intense reactions online.
During his rally, an animated Sharif passionately assured the crowd that his government was working tirelessly to improve Pakistan’s economic condition. “We will work day and night to ensure Pakistan progresses. The Almighty has always blessed this nation,” he stated. However, in a dramatic turn, he added, “My name won’t be Shehbaz Sharif if, through our efforts, Pakistan does not leave India behind in development and progress.”
Sharif further intensified his pledge by swearing on his elder brother and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s name, vowing to “take Pakistan to greatness and defeat India.”
Following his speech, Sharif faced sharp criticism, with many accusing him of making unrealistic promises. Several social media users ridiculed his declaration, questioning the feasibility of his claims given Pakistan’s ongoing economic crisis and mounting international debt.
Just weeks before this statement, Sharif had advocated for a resumption of dialogue with India, a stance that seemed contradictory to his latest remarks. India has consistently maintained that diplomatic discussions can only proceed if Pakistan takes concrete steps to eliminate terrorism from its soil.
As the speech circulates widely online, it remains to be seen whether this rhetoric will translate into actionable policies or remain another political statement.
