Pakistan is on the verge of experiencing one of the hottest April days in recorded history, as temperatures in parts of the country soar dangerously close to 50 degrees Celsius. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning for the period of April 26 to 30, urging the public to remain indoors and stay hydrated.

Over the weekend, several areas in central and southern Pakistan reported temperatures around 48°C, with forecasts predicting further increases through Wednesday. The city of Nawabshah is now being closely watched, as it’s expected to challenge — or even exceed — the world’s highest April temperature of 50°C, previously recorded in April 2018.

The warning comes amid a broader global heat trend. According to global meteorological data, April 2025 has been exceptionally hot, with 63% of the planet experiencing above-average temperatures. This trend is being attributed to ongoing climate change, compounded by a recent transition from a warming El Niño phase to a cooler La Niña phase.

The ECMWF model — a trusted global weather prediction system — forecasts that temperatures could reach 49°C on Wednesday and Thursday in parts of Pakistan. However, it’s worth noting that the same model underestimated last weekend’s highs by 2-3°C, increasing the chances of a new record being set this week.

21 Countries Facing Extreme Heat:

Pakistan is not alone. Countries like India, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Sudan, and Nigeria are among 21 nations predicted to face temperatures exceeding 110°F (43°C) this week. By late week, the extreme heat is expected to shift eastward, hitting China, Central Asia, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, with forecasts exceeding 38°C in those regions.

These patterns are consistent with rising global temperatures, as 116 countries have reported warmer-than-average conditions, marking 2025’s first quarter as the second-hottest on record, just behind 2024.
