“Pakistan Cricket Is in ICU”: Shahid Afridi Slams PCB After Champions Trophy Debacle

Former captain criticizes lack of continuity, questionable selections, and PCB leadership

March 12, 2025: Pakistan cricket legend Shahid Afridi has launched a scathing attack on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), comparing the team’s struggles to a patient in intensive care (ICU) following their disastrous Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. The Men in Green failed to win a single match, crashing out in the group stage after defeats to India and New Zealand and a washed-out game against Bangladesh.

Afridi Questions PCB’s Decision-Making

Afridi criticized the frequent leadership changes and poor selection policies that he believes are hampering Pakistan’s progress.

“All the time we talk about preparations, and when an event comes and we flop, we talk about surgery. The fact is, Pakistan cricket is in ICU because of incorrect decisions,” Afridi said.

He also took issue with the recall of Shadab Khan, questioning the logic behind his selection as vice-captain for the upcoming T20 series against New Zealand.

“On what basis has he been recalled? What are his performances in domestic cricket that justify his selection?” Afridi asked.

“No Continuity, No Progress”

Afridi further slammed the lack of consistency in PCB’s policies, stating that the board’s instability is preventing long-term success.

“We keep changing captains, coaches, and players, but what about the accountability of PCB officials?”

He also criticized the blame game within the team, where coaches, management, and players shift responsibility instead of addressing core issues.

Afridi on PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi

While acknowledging Mohsin Naqvi’s good intentions, Afridi believes the PCB Chairman lacks cricketing expertise and is overburdened with responsibilities.

“He wants to do well for Pakistan, but he is relying on advice. I told him he can’t handle three jobs at once. PCB Chairman is a full-time job.”

With Pakistan cricket in crisis, Afridi’s hard-hitting remarks highlight the need for serious reforms in the country’s cricketing setup.
