PBKS Clinch Top-Two IPL Spot with Dominant Win over Mumbai Indians

Josh Inglis and Priyansh Arya’s fifties power PBKS to victory, securing their highest IPL finish in 11 years.

Jaipur, May 27: Punjab Kings (PBKS) surged to second place on the IPL 2025 points table for the first time in 11 years with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Monday.

Chasing a challenging target of 185, PBKS’s run chase was anchored by fifties from Priyansh Arya and Josh Inglis, who stitched together a 100-run partnership that kept their team comfortably ahead.

Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh got off to a steady start, with PBKS scoring just 18 in the first three overs. Prabhsimran was dropped by Ashwani Kumar but fell soon after to Jasprit Bumrah for 13. Inglis then joined Arya at the crease, and the pair took the score to 47/1 by the end of the power-play.

The duo built their 50-run partnership in just 29 balls, taking the score to 89/1 after 10 overs. Inglis took a liking to Ashwani Kumar’s bowling, hammering three consecutive boundaries in the 11th over. Both batters reached their fifties in the 12th over, keeping PBKS ahead of the required rate.

Arya’s innings ended at 62 (35), including nine fours and two sixes, while Inglis continued to attack, scoring 73 off 42 balls. PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer (unbeaten on 20) and Nehal Wadhera (5*) finished the chase with eight balls to spare, with Iyer sealing victory with a six off Trent Boult in the 19th over.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians posted 184/6 in 20 overs, driven by Suryakumar Yadav’s gritty 57 and a quick cameo from Naman Dhir (20 off 6 balls). Rohit Sharma contributed 24, but his struggles meant he fell short of the 7000-run IPL milestone.

PBKS bowlers put in a disciplined performance, with Arshdeep Singh (2/28), Marco Jansen (2/32), and Vijaykumar Vyshak (2/38) sharing the wickets. Harpreet Brar also chipped in with the crucial wicket of Rohit Sharma.

Mitchell Santner (2/41) and Jasprit Bumrah (1/23) were the only wicket-takers for MI, but their efforts weren’t enough to defend the total.

This victory secured PBKS a top-two finish, ensuring they play in Qualifier 1 while MI will now head into the Eliminator. For PBKS, it’s a moment of triumph after years of inconsistency, as they enter the playoffs with momentum and confidence.

Brief Scores:

  • Mumbai Indians: 184/6 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 57, Ryan Rickelton 27; Arshdeep Singh 2/28)
  • Punjab Kings: 187/3 in 18.3 overs (Josh Inglis 73, Priyansh Arya 62; Mitchell Santner 2/41)
