Plane Crashes in San Diego: Sparks Massive Fire, Destroys 15 Homes
San Diego | May 22, 2025
In a devastating incident early Thursday morning, a small aircraft crashed into the Murphy Canyon neighborhood of San Diego, California, setting at least 15 homes on fire and forcing emergency evacuations, officials confirmed.
The Cessna 550, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), went down near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. The number of people onboard remains unclear, and authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.
“We have jet fuel all over the place,” said Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy during a press briefing. “Our main goal is to search all these homes and get everybody out right now.”
Authorities quickly evacuated three blocks surrounding the crash site. The San Diego Police Department issued an alert advising residents to avoid the area and report any debris or the smell of jet fuel.
Shocking visuals from the scene show rows of burned cars, rooftops charred, and homes engulfed in flames. One house reportedly took a direct hit from the aircraft.
Firefighters remain on site conducting search-and-rescue operations, and emergency crews are assessing structural damage across the neighborhood.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will jointly lead the investigation into what caused the jet to go down in a densely populated residential zone.
