PM Modi Congratulates Canada’s New PM Mark Carney, Signals Fresh Start in Bilateral Ties

After years of strained relations under Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings and expressed hope for stronger India-Canada ties under Mark Carney’s leadership.

April 29, 2025: PM Modi Sends Greetings to Mark Carney, Hints at Reset in India-Canada Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first world leaders to congratulate Mark Carney on his Liberal Party’s victory in Canada’s federal elections. The message marks a significant diplomatic gesture—the first official acknowledgment from New Delhi toward Ottawa following the strained relations under the previous Justin Trudeau administration.

In his congratulatory note, PM Modi emphasized the shared democratic values, commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties that bind India and Canada. He expressed optimism about strengthening the partnership and “unlocking greater opportunities” for both nations.

A New Chapter After Years of Frosty Ties

India-Canada relations had plunged to historic lows during Trudeau’s tenure. The breakdown stemmed from what India perceived as Ottawa’s leniency toward extremist elements promoting separatism and hatred under the guise of free speech. Matters worsened when Trudeau’s administration linked Indian diplomats to the deaths of pro-Khalistan figures in Canada, leading to the expulsion of diplomats on both sides and a near-complete diplomatic freeze.

Hope After Trudeau’s Exit

Trudeau’s resignation earlier this year paved the way for Mark Carney’s leadership. During his campaign, Carney stressed the need to mend ties with New Delhi, describing India as an essential ally. With the Liberal Party securing a third consecutive term—and possibly a near-majority—Carney now has the mandate to chart a fresh course in Canada-India relations, independent of the Khalistan-friendly pressures that plagued Trudeau’s government.

Jagmeet Singh’s Political Collapse

Adding to the shift in political dynamics, Jagmeet Singh, the NDP leader and a known pro-Khalistan voice, suffered a crushing defeat in the elections, including the loss of his Burnaby Central seat. His party’s dismal performance, reduced to single digits, means it can no longer exert influence over government policy as it did in the past.

Singh announced his resignation, symbolizing a broader rejection of extremist narratives within Canadian politics.

Looking Ahead

With PM Modi extending a hand of friendship and Carney signaling willingness to rebuild, the stage seems set for a potential reset in India-Canada relations—one rooted in mutual respect, democratic values, and economic cooperation.
