PM Modi Congratulates Singapore’s PM Lawrence Wong on Resounding Election Win, Reaffirms Strategic Ties
May 4, 2025:Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to Singapore’s newly elected Prime Minister Lawrence Wong following the People’s Action Party’s decisive victory in the general elections. Modi also reiterated India’s commitment to deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, “Heartiest congratulations @LawrenceWongST on your resounding victory in the general elections. India and Singapore share a strong and multifaceted partnership, underpinned by close people-to-people ties. I look forward to continue working closely with you to further advance our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
The People’s Action Party (PAP), which has governed Singapore since 1959, secured 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats and increased its vote share to 65.6 percent, an improvement from 61.2 percent in the 2020 elections.
Following the results, PM Wong expressed gratitude to the people of Singapore for their overwhelming support. “Singaporeans have given the @PAPSingapore a clear and strong mandate to govern. I am humbled by and grateful for the faith you have placed in me and my team,” he posted.
Wong emphasized national unity and inclusiveness in his post-election remarks, urging Singaporeans to face upcoming challenges together. “So let’s stand as One Team Singapore—to confront the storms ahead together and secure a brighter future for all of us. We will involve Singaporeans in this journey to shape our future. We will engage and listen—because every voice is important,” he said.
He also recognized the contributions of the opposition, particularly the Workers’ Party, and promised to take their role in Parliament seriously. “The Opposition… gave us a tough fight. I respect the Opposition’s presence in Parliament and will continue to take their views and suggestions seriously. Ultimately, the bigger contest is not between political parties, but between Singapore and the challenges facing us,” Wong stated.
Lawrence Wong began his political career in 2011 and has since held several key ministerial roles, including in Culture, National Development, and Education. He also served as Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and co-chaired the COVID-19 Multi-Ministry Taskforce, playing a significant role in the country’s pandemic response.
