January 28, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with US President Donald Trump on Monday, marking their first conversation since Trump’s inauguration for a historic second term. During the call, PM Modi reiterated India’s dedication to a “mutually beneficial and trusted partnership” with the United States.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said, “Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. Together, we will work for the welfare of our people and global peace, prosperity, and security.”
The conversation follows Trump’s return to the White House, where he has already enacted significant executive orders targeting immigration and H1-B visas, policies of particular importance to India, which remains one of the largest contributors to legal migration in the US.

Focus on Migration and Economic Collaboration
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio last week, highlighted New Delhi’s willingness to cooperate on the deportation of undocumented Indian citizens in the US. “If any of our citizens are here illegally, and if we are sure of their status, we are open to their legitimate return to India,” he said.
During the meeting, Secretary Rubio emphasized strengthening economic ties and addressing irregular migration issues. The conversation underscored both nations’ commitment to finding solutions for trade and immigration challenges.
A Growing Indian-American Presence
The Indian diaspora in the US has seen significant growth, with the population increasing by 50% in the last decade to nearly 4.8 million, according to the most recent census. Indian students also account for over a third of the nearly 1.3 million studying abroad globally.
