PM Modi Invited to G7 Summit in Canada’s Kananaskis Amid Thaw in Bilateral Ties
New Delhi | June 7, 2025: In a significant shift following years of diplomatic chill, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17. The invitation signals a renewed effort to mend ties between the two nations after a prolonged period of strained relations under former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.

Taking to social media, PM Modi acknowledged the invite and expressed optimism.
“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada… As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests,” Modi wrote on X.
The summit will mark PM Modi’s first visit to Canada since 2015 and the first bilateral engagement with the new Canadian leadership after years of friction over allegations made by the Trudeau government.

The India-Canada relationship plummeted in 2023 when Trudeau accused India of involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar — claims India vehemently denied. The diplomatic standoff escalated with the withdrawal and expulsion of diplomats on both sides.
However, the resignation of Trudeau earlier this year, followed by Carney’s election win in April, paved the way for renewed dialogue. Despite being from the same Liberal Party, Carney has taken a conciliatory tone, calling India-Canada relations “incredibly important” and advocating for diplomacy based on “mutual respect”.
The G7 invitation is being seen not just as a bilateral gesture, but also a rebuff to pro-Khalistan elements in Canada that had pushed against Modi’s participation. It also comes amid growing global interest in India’s role in multilateral forums and Indo-Pacific security.
While officials initially indicated that India may skip the summit due to the state of bilateral affairs, the new leadership in Ottawa appears to have changed the calculus.
With leaders from the world’s most advanced economies converging in Kananaskis, PM Modi’s attendance would mark a strong diplomatic signal of India’s willingness to engage and reframe partnerships — particularly with long-standing democracies.
