Explosive batter Nicholas Pooran has overtaken compatriot and T20 cricket legend Chris Gayle to become the highest run-getter for the West Indies in the short format. Pooran achieved this milestone during the ICC T20 World Cup match against New Zealand at Tarouba.
In the match, Pooran scored 17 runs off 12 balls, including three boundaries. Despite a modest outing with the bat, his performance was enough to break the record previously held by one of cricket’s all-time greats.
Pooran has now accumulated 1,914 runs in 91 T20Is at an average of 25.52 and a strike rate of 134.03, with 11 half-centuries. His highest score in the format is 82.
Chris Gayle, the previous record holder, scored 1,899 runs in 79 T20Is for the West Indies at an average of 27.92 and a strike rate of 137.50. Gayle’s T20I career includes two centuries and 14 fifties, with a highest score of 117.
The leading run-scorer in T20I cricket overall is Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, who has amassed 4,113 runs at an average of 40.72 and a strike rate of 129.46, including three centuries and 36 fifties. His highest score is 122.
