Pope Francis Shows ‘Slight Improvement’ Amid Critical Health Battle

After days of concern, the Vatican reports that Pope Francis’s condition has slightly improved, though he remains in critical care for pneumonia and kidney issues.

Vatican City, February 25: Pope Francis’s condition remains critical, but the Vatican has reported a “slight improvement” in his health as he continues treatment for double pneumonia and kidney issues at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

According to a Vatican statement on Monday, the 88-year-old pontiff’s health showed signs of stabilization, with no further episodes of respiratory distress.

“The clinical conditions of the Holy Father, in their critical nature, show a slight improvement,” the statement read.
“Today, there were no asthmatic respiratory attacks, and some laboratory tests have improved.”

Despite his fragile state, Pope Francis received the Eucharist in the morning and resumed some work in the afternoon. The Vatican confirmed that he continues to receive oxygen therapy, but at a slightly reduced level.

Longest Hospital Stay of His Papacy

Pope Francis was admitted to the hospital on February 14 with breathing difficulties, and his condition worsened over time. He is currently battling double pneumonia, a severe infection affecting both lungs, making breathing difficult.

The Vatican described his infection as “complex”, caused by multiple microorganisms. Due to his medical history—having lost part of one lung as a young adult due to pleurisy—he remains at higher risk of respiratory complications.

This hospital stay marks the longest of his nearly 12-year papacy, fueling global concern.

Global Support and Prayers

With the Pope’s hospitalization entering its second week, an outpouring of support and prayers has come from around the world.

  • A special prayer vigil was held in St. Peter’s Square on Monday evening, where thousands gathered to pray for his recovery.
  • Outside Gemelli Hospital, tributes and well-wishes have been placed by devoted followers.

Despite his ongoing health struggles, Vatican sources have reassured the public that Pope Francis remains “not in pain,” “eating normally,” and “in good spirits.”

The world continues to watch closely as the Catholic Church prays for the recovery of its beloved leader.
