Prince William Appoints Princess Diana’s Divorce Lawyer- Signaling a Break?
April 7, 2025: In a move that’s making headlines across the UK and beyond, Prince William, the 42-year-old Prince of Wales, has hired the legal team that once represented his late mother, Princess Diana, in her high-profile divorce from King Charles III.
Ditching the royal family’s long-standing association with Harbottle & Lewis, William has appointed Anthony Julius, the deputy chairman of Mishcon de Reya, as his new legal counsel. Julius famously represented Diana during her divorce proceedings in 1996 and was also a founding trustee of the Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, making this appointment deeply symbolic.

According to a Daily Mail report, this strategic switch is William’s way of “striking out on his own.” A palace insider was quoted saying, “William did not want to continue using his father’s lawyers. He wants to be his own man.”
This decision is seen as more than just a legal reshuffle—it’s a signal of the heir apparent’s desire to carve out an independent legacy, both publicly and behind palace doors. “He wants to be seen doing things differently,” added the insider.
The late Princess Diana and King Charles finalized their divorce in 1996 after years of separation. Their marriage, which began in 1981, effectively ended by 1992, with British Prime Minister John Major confirming their split in the House of Commons. Diana died tragically in a Paris car crash just a year after the divorce.
William’s choice to retain his mother’s former lawyer, especially one so closely tied to her public and private life, is being viewed as a powerful statement of identity and intention as he prepares for his future role as king.
