“Promise Made, Promise Kept!”—Astronauts Safely Return as Trump, Musk, and NASA Celebrate

SpaceX Dragon Capsule Completes Landmark Mission After Boeing Starliner Delays

🔹 A Long-Awaited Return to Earth

After nine months in space, NASA Crew-9 astronauts Sunita Williams, Nick Hague, Butch Wilmore, and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov safely splashed down off the coast of Tallahassee, Florida, marking the completion of an extended mission caused by delays with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft.

🚀 Mission Highlights:
✔️ Crew Dragon landed in the Gulf of America, safely recovering all astronauts
✔️ Williams and Wilmore spent 286 days in space due to technical setbacks
✔️ First wooden satellite deployed for space research
✔️ Williams sets record for most spacewalking hours by a female astronaut

The astronauts disembarked the capsule on stretchers, as is standard protocol for those returning from long-duration missions, allowing their bodies to readjust to Earth’s gravity.

🔹 White House and Elon Musk Applaud the Mission

📢 The White House hailed the mission as a testament to President Trump’s leadership, crediting him for prioritizing the return of the stranded astronauts.

🗣️ White House Statement:
“PROMISE MADE, PROMISE KEPT: President Trump pledged to rescue the astronauts stranded in space for nine months. Today, they safely splashed down in the Gulf of America, thanks to Elon Musk, SpaceX, and NASA!”

🚀 Elon Musk, SpaceX CEO, also expressed gratitude, tweeting:
“Congratulations to the SpaceX and NASA teams for another safe astronaut return! Thank you to Donald Trump for prioritizing this mission!”

🔹 Boeing Starliner Delays Extended the Mission

🛰️ Williams and Wilmore originally launched on June 5, 2024, aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, expecting to return after just a week. However, technical failures forced NASA to return Starliner uncrewed, extending their mission for nearly nine months.

Meanwhile, Nick Hague and Aleksandr Gorbunov lifted off on September 28, 2024, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, joining them later in the mission.

🔍 Key Mission Statistics:
📌 Williams & Wilmore: 286 days in space, 4,576 orbits around Earth
📌 Hague & Gorbunov: 171 days in space, 2,736 orbits around Earth
📌 Williams’ total space time: 608 days across three missions
📌 Williams sets a female astronaut record: 62 hours & 6 minutes of total spacewalking time

🔹 Scientific Achievements & Spacewalks

Throughout their mission, Crew-9 conducted groundbreaking research and maintenance tasks, contributing over 900 hours to scientific advancements.

🔬 Experiments Included:
✔️ Stem cell research for disease treatments
✔️ Circadian rhythm lighting studies
✔️ Microorganism survival tests in space
✔️ Growth of plants in microgravity

🚀 Spacewalk Highlights:
✔️ Williams completed two spacewalks, one alongside Wilmore and another with Hague
✔️ Crew removed an outdated radio antenna and collected samples from the ISS exterior
✔️ First wooden satellite launched, testing sustainable materials for future space research

🔹 A Milestone for NASA’s Commercial Crew Program

👨‍🚀 NASA Acting Administrator Janet Petro praised the crew’s contributions:
🗣️ “This mission demonstrated the perseverance, ingenuity, and dedication of our international space teams. From low Earth orbit to the Moon and Mars, we continue to push the boundaries of exploration.”

🔄 The return of Crew-9 paves the way for NASA’s SpaceX Crew-10, which successfully docked with the ISS on March 16 to begin another long-duration mission.

🔍 Next Steps:
📌 Crew Dragon Freedom will be refurbished for future NASA missions
📌 NASA’s Commercial Crew Program continues supporting human spaceflight to ISS and beyond
📌 SpaceX and NASA are now preparing for future missions to the Moon and Mars
