South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has opted out of his central contract with Cricket South Africa (CSA) to gain more flexibility for participating in various T20 franchise leagues globally.
CSA, in a statement, said that the spinner has decided to opt out of his central contract with immediate effect, which will allow Shamsi to have more flexibility regarding participation in various T20 franchise leagues worldwide while also being available for South Africa in white-ball cricket.
“Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Proteas Men’s spinner Tabraiz Shamsi have today jointly announced that the 34-year-old has decided to opt out of his national contract, effective immediately. The move will allow Shamsi, who has played 51 One-Day Internationals and 70 T20 Internationals, greater flexibility to participate in various leagues around the world while maintaining his availability to represent South Africa across both white-ball formats,” said the statement from CSA issued on their X account.
Despite this decision, Shamsi remains committed to playing for South Africa in white-ball formats, ensuring that his availability for national duty remains intact. In a statement, Shamsi explained that the move allows him to better provide for his family while continuing to pursue his dream of bringing a World Cup to South Africa.
Cricket South Africa acknowledged and respected his decision, reaffirming their confidence in Shamsi’s dedication to South African cricket. The 34-year-old has been a vital part of the Proteas’ white-ball squads, having taken 72 wickets in 51 ODIs and 89 wickets in 70 T20Is .
This decision mirrors a growing trend among cricketers seeking more financial freedom while remaining available for international duties.
