As tensions rise in the Arctic, Russia distances itself from the US’s controversial move to claim Greenland, calling it a matter between Washington and Denmark

Moscow, March 29 – In a geopolitical twist, Russian President Vladimir Putin has signaled that Russia will not interfere in US President Donald Trump’s renewed push to annex Greenland, calling it “a matter for two specific countries – the US and Denmark.”

Putin made the remark during his speech at Russia’s Arctic Forum in Murmansk, a city located above the Arctic Circle, as he outlined Moscow’s growing strategic interest in the polar region. While promising to strengthen Russia’s leadership in the Arctic, Putin notably stopped short of staking any territorial claims.

“Geopolitical competition in the Arctic region is intensifying,” Putin said. “America’s plans in relation to Greenland are serious… It is clear the US will continue to systematically pursue its geo-strategic, military, political, and economic interests in the Arctic.”

Despite that, Putin declined to challenge Trump’s ambitions. “As for Greenland, this is a matter for two specific countries. It has nothing to do with us,” he added.

🇺🇸🤝🇷🇺 US-Russia Arctic Alignment?

Putin’s comments have sparked speculation about a growing thaw in US-Russia relations, particularly after Trump’s return to office in January 2025. Analysts say Moscow’s silence could be interpreted as tacit approval, especially as Trump and Putin both signal interest in cooperation over competition in the Arctic — a region rich in oil, gas, and rare earth minerals.

Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s special envoy for foreign investment, further underscored this emerging détente, stating:

“We are open to investment cooperation in the Arctic — in logistics or other sectors. But of course, the war in Ukraine must first be resolved.”

🇩🇰 Greenland, Denmark Reject Trump’s Expansionism

Meanwhile, Greenland and Denmark have categorically rejected Trump’s revived proposal to annex the island, which he first floated in 2019. Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede issued a scathing response:

“Greenland is not for sale. The era of trust and friendship with America is over.”

Massive protests have erupted across Greenland, with residents denouncing US pressure tactics and warning of encroachments on their sovereignty. It’s being called the largest protest movement in the island’s history.

🔁 Geopolitical Fallout and Ukraine Fears

Observers worry that Putin’s neutral stance on Greenland may have wider implications — particularly for Ukraine, where Russia has already seized significant territory. Putin’s refusal to condemn US territorial moves while holding onto Ukrainian land raises alarms in Europe, where leaders are scrambling to form new alliances outside Washington’s orbit.

Meanwhile, Trump’s foreign policy pivot towards Moscow and harsh stance on Ukrainian President Zelensky has left Europe concerned about waning US support for NATO partners.
