Putin Says Russia Won’t Oppose Trump’s Greenland Annexation Plan

As tensions rise in the Arctic, Russia distances itself from the US’s controversial move to claim Greenland, calling it a matter between Washington and Denmark

Moscow, March 29 – In a geopolitical twist, Russian President Vladimir Putin has signaled that Russia will not interfere in US President Donald Trump’s renewed push to annex Greenland, calling it “a matter for two specific countries – the US and Denmark.”

Putin made the remark during his speech at Russia’s Arctic Forum in Murmansk, a city located above the Arctic Circle, as he outlined Moscow’s growing strategic interest in the polar region. While promising to strengthen Russia’s leadership in the Arctic, Putin notably stopped short of staking any territorial claims.

“Geopolitical competition in the Arctic region is intensifying,” Putin said. “America’s plans in relation to Greenland are serious… It is clear the US will continue to systematically pursue its geo-strategic, military, political, and economic interests in the Arctic.”

Despite that, Putin declined to challenge Trump’s ambitions. “As for Greenland, this is a matter for two specific countries. It has nothing to do with us,” he added.
