Qatari Prime Minister Al Thani mediates key breakthrough as Tehran agrees to U.S.-proposed ceasefire following Iran’s missile strikes on American bases.
Doha [Qatar], June 24 – In a critical diplomatic breakthrough, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani successfully secured Iran’s approval for a U.S.-proposed ceasefire with Israel, Reuters reported, quoting a source close to the negotiations. The agreement followed direct communication between Al Thani and Iranian officials, and came just hours after Iran launched missile strikes on U.S. military bases in Qatar and Iraq, amid spiraling regional tensions.
According to the Reuters report, Prime Minister Al Thani’s phone call with Tehran took place after U.S. President Donald Trump personally contacted Qatar’s Emir, urging Doha to mediate. Trump reportedly informed the Qatari leadership that Israel had accepted the ceasefire and sought their help to bring Iran on board with the peace proposal.
Shortly after the diplomatic exchanges, President Trump took to Truth Social to announce that both Israel and Iran had agreed to a “complete and total” ceasefire, which would be implemented in a phased manner starting within six hours.
“CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!” Trump wrote.
The ceasefire process will begin with Iran initiating a 12-hour truce, followed by Israel’s 12-hour ceasefire window, leading to a formal end to hostilities within 24 hours. Trump emphasized the importance of mutual respect during the overlapping truce periods.
“Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL,” he stated.
“On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, ‘THE 12 DAY WAR.’ This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will!”
“God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!” he concluded.
Background: The 12-Day Conflict
The conflict began on June 13, when Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion”, targeting Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure. In retaliation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) initiated “Operation True Promise 3”, a sweeping drone and missile offensive against Israeli fuel supply centers and air force facilities.
The crisis escalated further when the U.S. carried out “Operation Midnight Hammer” early Sunday, conducting precision airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites at Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz. Iran responded by launching missiles at American military bases in Qatar and Iraq, including the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. installation in the region, according to CNN.
The ceasefire announcement, brokered in part by Qatar’s diplomatic intervention, now opens a path for potential negotiations to stabilize the region and prevent another devastating escalation.
