India becomes the 4th most represented country globally with 54 institutions; IIT Delhi rises to 123rd spot worldwide, overtaking IIT Bombay
June 19, 2025: India has registered a remarkable rise in global academic visibility with 54 universities featured in the QS World University Rankings 2026, making it the fourth most represented country—behind only the United States, the United Kingdom, and Mainland China. Among the Indian institutions, IIT Delhi has emerged as the highest-ranked, climbing to 123rd globally, a major leap from its 150th position in 2025 and 197th in 2024.
🔹 IIT Delhi Leads India’s Global Surge
IIT Delhi outperformed its peers by ranking:
- 50th in Employer Reputation
- 86th in Citations per Faculty
- 142nd in Academic Reputation
Meanwhile, IIT Bombay, which led last year among Indian institutions, dropped to 129th place from 118th. In a stunning jump, IIT Madras improved 47 spots, climbing from 227 to 180.

🔹 India’s Expanding Academic Footprint
With eight new Indian entries this year—the highest of any country—India’s presence in global higher education is stronger than ever. Notable performers include:
- IIT Kharagpur – 215
- IISc Bangalore – 219
- Delhi University – 328
- BITS Pilani – 668
- OP Jindal Global University – 851-900
🌍 Global Rankings: Familiar Leaders, Strong Asian Presence
- MIT continues its 14-year reign at No. 1
- Imperial College London takes second
- Stanford University is third
Asia continues its upward trend:
- Peking University – 14
- Tsinghua University – 17
- Fudan University – 30
- Politecnico di Milano (Italy) enters top 100 for the first time at 98
🔍 New Metric Introduced: International Student Diversity
For the first time, QS included International Student Diversity (ISD) as a non-weighted indicator. It evaluates both the percentage and national spread of international students on campuses, acknowledging efforts toward global inclusivity.
