Rahul Dravid Reflects on Rohit Sharma's Inspiring Phone Call
Rahul Dravid, who led India to their T20 World Cup victory as head coach, revealed that a phone call from skipper Rohit Sharma after last year’s ODI World Cup was one of the most memorable moments of his life.
Dravid’s tenure as head coach concluded on a high note with India’s triumphant end to a 13-year ICC World Cup drought, securing the title in Barbados.
Although his time as head coach saw a bitter end after Australia defeated the previously unbeaten Indian team in the final of the ODI World Cup in Ahmedabad, Rohit Sharma persuaded Dravid to stay on until the T20 World Cup. Dravid recounted, “I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue after the 50-Over World Cup. Rohit’s call to have another go at it in six or eight months was something I’m truly grateful for. It was one of the best calls I’ve ever received.”
The victory was deeply emotional for Dravid, who is typically known for his calm demeanor. Reflecting on his time with the team, he praised the players’ dedication, resilience, and constant drive for improvement. “These boys are like family. Their hard work and fighting spirit have been incredible. It’s been a privilege to coach them.”
Dravid also expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans. “The love we’ve received has been phenomenal. Cricket is the greatest game in the world because of Indian fans.”
As Dravid’s tenure ends, VVS Laxman is set to take over as head coach for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe. The search for India’s next permanent head coach continues.
