Rahul Gandhi, INDIA Bloc MPs Detained Amid Voter Fraud Protest
The leaders were protesting against the Election Commission’s alleged collusion with the BJP to manipulate voter lists. The protest, which began as a march from Parliament, led to the adjournment of both houses and a tense standoff with police.
August 11, 2025: There was a dramatic political confrontation in the center of the city today when Delhi Police arrested well-known opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, during a protest against what they said was “voter fraud.”
The INDIA group, which is primarily made up of Congress MPs, was walking from Parliament to the Election Commission’s (EC) building to call for accurate voter lists. This led to a tense standoff with the police.
The protest, which stopped both Houses of Parliament and made the meeting be held off, is the most recent in a long line of grievances against the EC. Opposition lawmakers say that the electoral commission is working with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to manipulate the voter records, but the EC has strenuously denied this.
The opposition believes there are “strange differences,” including how many new voters there were in the Maharashtra state elections and how messed up the voter records are in Karnataka. Rahul Gandhi has been a strong leader of this charge, using presentations to prove that there was a lot of fraud and demanding for a searchable, digital copy of the voter list to be made accessible to the public.
The EC’s “special intensive revision” (SIR) of the Bihar voter list also drew criticism. The opposition has brought this up at the Supreme Court. The court has allowed the revision to go on, but it has instructed the EC to make sure that no legitimate voters are left out without enough notice and a chance to appeal.
The Election Commission has strongly disputed the accusations and requested Rahul Gandhi to show proof in the form of a written affidavit. The EC claims that its procedures are open and aimed to make sure that elections are fair and free. It also says that the opposition’s campaign is “misleading.”
