Rajnath Singh Calls for Global Oversight of Pakistan’s Nukes as IAEA Denies Radiation Leak

May 15, 2025: During a visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called upon the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to place Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal under international supervision, questioning the safety of such weapons in the hands of what he termed an “irresponsible and rogue nation.”

Speaking in Srinagar during an interaction with the Armed Forces, Singh emphasized India’s unwavering stance against terrorism and dismissed Pakistan’s long-standing nuclear posturing. “The world knows the precision of our military. When we strike, we don’t count — we leave that to the enemy. From the soil of Srinagar, I ask: are nuclear weapons safe with such an irresponsible nation? I believe the IAEA must supervise Pakistan’s nuclear weapons,” he declared.

In response to growing concerns on social media regarding an alleged radiation leak in Pakistan, the IAEA clarified on Thursday that there has been no radiation leak or release from any nuclear facility in Pakistan. The agency, which is responsible for promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technology and ensuring its safety, reiterated that no such incidents have been detected based on current information.

Meanwhile, speculation has surged online about a potential nuclear-related incident in Pakistan’s Kirana Hills, a region rumored to house sensitive installations. In a recent press briefing, Air Marshal AK Bharti addressed the issue, stating, “We did not target Kirana Hills. Thank you for informing us that it houses nuclear infrastructure — we had no prior knowledge.”

The US State Department, when asked whether any American teams had been sent to Pakistan to investigate potential radiation issues, declined to comment, saying, “Nothing to share at this time.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reinforcing India’s firm policy stance, said earlier, “India will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail. Operation Sindoor reflects our new doctrine against terrorism,” referencing the Indian military’s response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which targeted infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
