March 26, 2025: Afghanistan’s premier spinner, Rashid Khan, made history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 by breaking Jasprit Bumrah’s record to become the third-fastest player to reach 150 wickets in the tournament. Rashid achieved this milestone during Gujarat Titans’ season opener against Punjab Kings, where his impressive career tally of wickets saw him surpass Bumrah’s previous record.
Rashid took just 122 matches to reach the 150-wicket mark, two matches fewer than Bumrah’s 124. This puts him in the company of IPL greats like Yuzvendra Chahal and Lasith Malinga. Despite a disappointing performance in the match, where he gave away 48 runs at an economy rate of 12.00, Rashid’s achievement is a testament to his consistent excellence in the IPL.

In the match, Gujarat Titans were up against Punjab Kings, who posted a massive total of 243/5. Rashid’s lone scalp came when he dismissed debutant Priyansh Arya for a quickfire 47 off 23 balls. His delivery to Arya resulted in a top edge, with Sai Sudharsan taking a comfortable catch. Although Rashid’s economy rate was inflated during his four-over spell, this wicket was a shining moment in an otherwise challenging game for the spinner.
Punjab Kings’ Shreyas Iyer played a blistering knock, remaining unbeaten on 97*, and Shashank Singh contributed with a quick-fire 44*, as the Kings set a daunting target. Gujarat Titans, despite a strong effort, fell short by 11 runs in the chase, giving Punjab a memorable victory.
Rashid Khan’s achievement solidifies his place as one of the best spinners in IPL history, with his remarkable consistency and ability to strike in crucial moments.
