Bengaluru, June 10, 2025 —
Fresh off their historic IPL 2025 title win, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) may soon be under new ownership. According to a report in the NDTV, the current owners Diageo Plc are exploring a partial or full sale of the franchise, riding high on its increased brand value post-championship.

RCB, managed by Diageo’s Indian arm United Spirits Ltd, has already begun informal talks with investors, with the franchise valued at nearly $2 billion (₹16,800 crore), according to Bloomberg. While no official confirmation has been issued, the move is being seen as an effort to monetise the surge in popularity and market sentiment following the team’s long-awaited title breakthrough.
Reports of a potential sale led to a 3.3% surge in United Spirits’ stock on Tuesday. Diageo, the British spirits giant and parent company of United Spirits, is said to be in discussions with advisors to manage the transaction. The company is reportedly undecided on whether it will divest completely or retain a minority stake.

The development comes at a crucial time—RCB’s brand visibility and commercial appeal are at an all-time high, bolstered by a loyal global fanbase and a triumphant 2025 season led by Virat Kohli and team.
RCB was founded in 2008 and originally owned by Vijay Mallya, former Kingfisher Airlines chairman. Amid mounting financial troubles, Mallya’s stake was eventually acquired by Diageo through United Spirits.
Despite being one of the most followed cricket franchises worldwide, RCB remained trophyless for 17 years until their fairytale win this season.
The jubilation was tempered by sorrow when 11 fans lost their lives during the victory celebrations at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The tragedy has cast a shadow over the franchise’s title win, adding emotional complexity to any forthcoming ownership transition.
