Rohit Sharma Bids Farewell to Test Cricket with Immediate Effect
May 7, 2025: In a major development, Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect, as confirmed by news agency PTI.
The 37-year-old batting stalwart, who had been leading the Test side since 2022, leaves behind a legacy of resilience, composure, and crucial performances at the top of the order. His sudden decision has taken fans and cricketing circles by surprise, although it comes amidst speculation of a transition phase in Indian Test cricket.
Rohit made his Test debut in 2013 against the West Indies, where he scored a stunning 177 in his maiden innings at Eden Gardens. Since then, he played 56 Test matches, scoring over 3,900 runs at an average of nearly 46, including 10 centuries and 16 fifties.
Often hailed for transforming his white-ball genius into the longer format, Rohit Sharma particularly excelled after being promoted to open the batting in Tests in 2019. His performances during India’s historic home and overseas campaigns, including series wins in Australia and dominance in England, were instrumental in shaping India’s red-ball dominance.
Though no official statement has been released by Rohit yet, sources suggest the decision was driven by a combination of workload management, age, and the desire to focus on limited-overs cricket, especially with the 2025 Champions Trophy and 2026 T20 World Cup approaching.
The BCCI is expected to name a new Test captain soon, with the likes of KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, and Shubman Gill reportedly in contention.
