Rohit Sharma Calls Defeat 'Mentally Disturbing' After India's Crushing Loss to Australia in 4th Test
December 30, 2024: Melbourne: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma expressed deep disappointment after India suffered a 184-run defeat against Australia in the 4th Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The loss has left India trailing 1-2 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with the final Test set to begin in Sydney on January 3, 2025.
Rohit Sharma did not hold back in his assessment, calling the defeat “mentally disturbing” and acknowledging the team’s inability to capitalize on key moments.
“It is mentally disturbing when you can’t do what you have come to do,” said Rohit in the post-match press conference.
He highlighted how India had Australia pinned at 90/6 in their second innings but failed to seal the advantage. The hosts managed to stretch their lead to a daunting 340 runs, with lower-order contributions proving decisive.
“We had Australia 90 for 6. We wanted to fight hard from there, but we were not good enough. Their last-wicket partnership cost us the game,” Rohit admitted.
India’s batting faltered under pressure as Rohit Sharma (9), KL Rahul (0), and Virat Kohli (5) failed to anchor the innings. The Indian team was dismissed for 155 while chasing 340, leaving fans and experts disappointed.
“We knew 340 wasn’t going to be easy. We tried to set a platform and keep wickets in hand for the last two sessions, but they bowled perfectly,” Rohit explained.
Rohit praised Nitish Kumar Reddy for his composed century in the first innings and highlighted the immense potential of the young batter.
“He’s coming here for the first time, and these conditions can get tough. He showed great character and technique,” said Rohit.
He also commended Jasprit Bumrah for his five-wicket haul and relentless performance despite minimal support from the other bowlers.
“He’s been absolutely brilliant and continues to deliver for the team,” Rohit said.
Australian captain Pat Cummins justified not declaring the innings earlier, explaining the need to eliminate any chance of an Indian victory.
“We wanted to take an India victory out of the equation. With plenty of runs to play with, we decided to keep batting,” said Cummins.
He also praised the crowd and called the MCG Test one of the best he’s ever played in.
The fans are also rather upset at the Indian loss and are largely blaming Rohit and Virat’s poor form for India’s disastrous batting performance.
