May 05, 2025: In a stirring display of national pride and remembrance, the British royal family has embarked on a series of high-profile events commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, the historic date marking the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945.

On May 5, King Charles III, 76, and Queen Camilla, 77, made a poignant first appearance at the Queen Victoria Memorial outside Buckingham Palace. Dressed in perfect harmony, the monarchs were joined by other senior royals, including Prince William and Princess Kate, who made a surprise appearance with their three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
The family stood alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and veterans from the Royal British Legion to witness a ceremonial military procession from Whitehall down The Mall, honoring the brave men and women who served during the Second World War.
Balcony Moment and Flypast Tribute

Following the procession, the royal family gathered on the Buckingham Palace balcony for a patriotic flypast — a symbolic and celebratory aerial display witnessed by the royals and guests, including veterans watching from the palace gardens. Among those present were Prince Edward, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, and Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent.
As a former Royal Navy officer and the current head of the UK’s Armed Forces, King Charles has long championed military causes, and this week’s commemorations highlight the monarchy’s enduring commitment to honoring the armed forces.
Veterans’ Tea Party and Upcoming Events
After the flypast, the King and Queen are set to host a heartfelt tea party at Buckingham Palace, welcoming World War II veterans and members of the wartime generation. Prince William, Princess Kate, and Prime Minister Starmer are expected to attend the event, further underscoring the significance of this national moment.
On May 6 — which marks the second anniversary of Their Majesties’ coronation — Queen Camilla will unveil a moving new installation of ceramic poppies at the Tower of London.

Nationwide Tribute Culminates on VE Day
On May 8, the royal family will unite once more for a Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey. That evening, King Charles and Queen Camilla will conclude the commemorations at a special VE Day concert held at Horse Guards Parade.
Royal Representation Across Europe
Members of the extended royal family are also representing the Crown across Europe. Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, and Birgitte, the Duchess of Gloucester, honored the Liberation of Denmark on May 4. Meanwhile, Princess Anne and Sir Tim Laurence will visit the Channel Islands to commemorate the liberation of Guernsey and Sark on May 9 and 10.
This series of appearances reflects the royal family’s steadfast dedication to preserving the memory of those who served and sacrificed during World War II, as the UK and its allies mark this historic milestone with reverence and unity.
