Russia Earthquake: Twin Earthquakes Jolt Kamchatka Region, Both Over 6.5 Magnitude
July 20, 2025: Russia Earthquake – Two powerful earthquakes struck off the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Sunday, rattling the seismically active region within hours of each other. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that the first quake, measuring 6.6 in magnitude, occurred near the Kamchatka coast at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
Concerns about possible aftershocks and structural damage in the area were raised when, just hours later, a second, slightly bigger earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, again at a shallow depth of 10 km.
The first earthquake was originally registered by GFZ as a magnitude 6.2 event, but after additional investigation, it was revised upward to 6.6.
No Reports of Damage or Casualties Right Away
Significant damage or casualties have not yet been reported by authorities. However, given that these quakes typically cause more intense shaking at the surface, the shallow depth of both earthquakes is noteworthy. Seismic activity is still being monitored, and local emergency services are keeping an eye on the situation.
