
Russia, UAE Eye Deeper BRICS Parliamentary Ties in St. Petersburg Talks
May 23, 2025: In a key diplomatic meeting in St. Petersburg, Valentina Matvienko, Chair of the Russian Federation Council, met with Saqr Ghobash, Chairman of the Federal National Council of the UAE, to discuss strengthening parliamentary cooperation within the BRICS framework.
Matvienko emphasized the importance of deepening inter-parliamentary collaboration as BRICS expands, highlighting the UAE’s recent entry into the group as a fresh opportunity for cooperation. She noted that the parliamentary dimension of BRICS is steadily evolving and lawmakers have a critical role in shaping its future.
Both leaders acknowledged the growing strength of Russia-UAE relations, supported by consistent engagement at the highest levels of government, legislature, and business. Discussions also touched on economic cooperation, especially in light of a forthcoming economic partnership agreement between the UAE and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
The dialogue also explored humanitarian and educational cooperation, with both sides recognizing the value of cultural and academic exchanges in building enduring ties.
Matvienko praised Ghobash’s role in advancing bilateral relations. In return, Ghobash thanked Russia for backing the UAE’s entry into BRICS and invited Matvienko for an official visit to the UAE.
The meeting reflected both nations’ commitment to strengthening ties within BRICS and broader international platforms, advancing shared interests across economic, legislative, and cultural fronts.
