Chennai Super Kings star Sanju Samson added another remarkable achievement to his career on Saturday, becoming the fourth Indian batter to smash 400 or more sixes in T20 cricket.
The milestone came during Chennai Super Kings’ Indian Premier League 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium, popularly known as Chepauk.
Samson reached the landmark in style, smashing four sixes during his innings to take his career tally to 401 sixes, placing him among an elite group of Indian power-hitters.
Joins Elite List of Indian Six-Hitters
With this achievement, Samson joined some of the biggest names in Indian cricket who have crossed the 400-sixes mark in T20s:
- Rohit Sharma — 554 sixes
- Virat Kohli — 440 sixes
- Suryakumar Yadav — 421 sixes
- Sanju Samson — 401 sixes
Interestingly, Samson leads this elite group in terms of six-hitting frequency, averaging 1.26 sixes per innings, slightly ahead of Suryakumar Yadav (1.25), Rohit Sharma (1.22), and Virat Kohli (1.10).
Samson Roars Back to Form With Stunning Century
After three quiet outings, Samson produced a sensational comeback performance, scoring an unbeaten 115 off 56 balls.
His knock included:
- 11 fours
- 4 sixes
- Strike rate: 205.36
This century marked his fourth IPL hundred and notably his first for Chennai Super Kings, having joined the franchise last year following a trade from Rajasthan Royals.
Out of his four IPL centuries:
- Two came for Rajasthan Royals (2019, 2021)
- One came for Delhi Capitals (2017)
- One has now come for Chennai Super Kings
Key Partnerships Power CSK to Big Total
Samson laid the foundation for a strong total despite a slow start from CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored 15 off 18 balls in a 62-run opening stand.
The innings gained momentum when Samson stitched together a crucial 113-run partnership with Ayush Mhatre, who scored 59 off 36 balls, hitting three fours and four sixes.
This partnership became the second-highest stand for CSK against Delhi Capitals in IPL history, behind the 141-run opening partnership by Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad in Delhi in 2023.
A late flourish from Shivam Dube, who scored 20 off 10 balls*, helped Chennai Super Kings finish strongly at 212/2 in 20 overs.
For Delhi Capitals, captain Axar Patel was among the wicket-takers with figures of 1/39.
Dominant Against Pace and Spin
Samson displayed complete control against both pace and spin bowling during his innings.
Against pacers, he scored:
- 84 runs off 39 balls
- Strike rate: 215.4
- Boundaries: 11 fours, 3 sixes
Against spin, he contributed:
- 31 runs off 17 balls
- Strike rate: 182.3
- Boundaries: 4 fours, 1 six
His aggressive yet calculated approach ensured CSK maintained scoring momentum throughout the innings.
Match Situation
Earlier in the match, Delhi Capitals won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Despite a slightly cautious start from Ruturaj Gaikwad, Samson’s fluent batting — reminiscent of the form that earned him the Player of the Tournament award in the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year — allowed Chennai Super Kings to recover quickly and build a commanding total.
The innings ultimately powered CSK past the 200-run mark, placing them in a strong position in the contest.
