January 28, 2025: Selena Gomez recently took to Instagram Stories to express her heartbreak over former US President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, only to delete the emotional video shortly after. The singer-actor, dressed in a black outfit, appeared at home as she addressed the deportation of illegal immigrants.

“I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked. The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise,” she said tearfully in the now-deleted clip.
The video also featured a Mexican flag emoji and the text “I’m sorry,” reflecting Selena’s deep connection to the issue. While the clip was removed, a fan page on X (formerly Twitter) shared it, keeping the conversation alive.
The internet was divided in its response. While many fans supported her heartfelt message, others criticized her reaction, citing the legal framework of US immigration policies.
“It’s not Trump’s immigration law; it’s U.S. law against people entering illegally,” one user commented. Another added, “Her people are American citizens. If she wants to be Mexican, she can go live amongst ‘her people.’”
Criticism also highlighted the perceived selectiveness of her empathy. “Selectively picking which immigration tragedy upsets you is performative,” read one comment.
Following the backlash, Selena posted another note on her Instagram Stories addressing the criticism, stating, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.” Like her earlier post, this too was later deleted.
Selena Gomez has been an outspoken advocate for immigrant rights. In 2019, she produced a Netflix documentary titled Living Undocumented, which chronicles the struggles of eight undocumented families navigating life under Trump’s administration.
Her recent emotional outburst serves as another reminder of her deep-rooted passion for social issues, even as it sparks debate over how celebrities express their views on complex matters like immigration.
