Seven Indian Nationals Injured in Magdeburg Christmas Market Attack

Suspect Apprehended Following Deliberate Car Attack That Killed Five and Injured 68 in Germany

Magdeburg [Germany], December 22: A horrific car attack at a bustling Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, on Friday night left seven Indian nationals injured, alongside dozens of others.

While three victims have been discharged from the hospital, the Indian Mission in Germany is closely monitoring the condition of the remaining injured, according to official sources.

The attack, described by authorities as deliberate, resulted in the deaths of five people, including an adult and a toddler. An additional 68 individuals sustained injuries, with 15 in serious condition, 37 moderately injured, and 16 escaping with minor wounds.

Saxony-Anhalt Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff confirmed that the suspect is a Saudi national, residing in Germany since 2006 and working as a doctor.

“We are currently compiling further data and conducting an interrogation. According to our information, this was an individual perpetrator, and there is no ongoing danger to the city,” Haseloff stated in a televised address.

Global Leaders Express Solidarity

The incident has drawn global condemnation, with world leaders expressing their condolences and standing in solidarity with Germany:

  • UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer: “I am horrified by the atrocious attack in Magdeburg tonight. My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected. We stand with the people of Germany.”
  • French President Emmanuel Macron: “Deeply shocked by the horror at the Magdeburg Christmas market. France shares the pain of the German people and expresses its full solidarity.”

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser described the incident as “deeply shocking,” commending the swift response of emergency services who worked tirelessly to assist the injured and secure the area.

The Indian Mission in Germany is actively coordinating with local authorities to ensure that the injured Indian nationals receive the best medical care and necessary assistance.
