Shark Week 2025 Kicks Off — New Smyrna Beach Embraces Its Title As ‘Shark Bite Capital of the World’

From Discovery Channel premieres to surfside celebrations, Florida’s New Smyrna Beach turns jaws into joy

July 20, 2025 — As the Discovery Channel kicks off Shark Week 2025 on Sunday, July 20, airing 21 shark-related specials through July 26, one place in Florida is taking the celebration to a whole new (sea) level — New Smyrna Beach, dubbed the “shark bite capital of the world.”

Despite the ominous-sounding nickname, the coastal community embraces it with a splash of humor and local flair. Volusia County, where New Smyrna Beach is located, has logged over 300 shark attacks since the early 1900s — most minor — thanks to the area’s biodiversity and popularity with surfers.

This year’s Shark Week includes quirky new programming like “Dancing With Sharks”, an underwater dance-off hosted by Tom Bergeron, plus thrill-packed features such as “Air Jaws: The Hunt for Colossus” and “Great White Assassins.”

Shark Week, NSB Style: Celebrating with Shark-Themed Specials

Local venues are diving in:

  • Sharky’s Bar & Restaurant (409 Flagler Ave): Hosting a watch party with shark-themed drinks, eats, and full-screen action.
  • River Deck Tiki Bar & Restaurant (107 N. Riverside Dr.): All-week-long shark-tastic drink specials and beachside vibes.
  • Flagler Tavern (414 Flagler Ave): Shark Week-themed events and festive cocktails to match.
  • Marine Discovery Center: Promoting shark safety awareness and marine education during the weeklong celebration.

Why So Many Shark Bites in New Smyrna?

The Indian River Lagoon, one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America, acts as a nursery for several shark species. Blacktip sharks, known for being curious biters, are most often responsible for minor incidents.

On July 18, the fourth shark bite of the year occurred when an 18-year-old surfer was bitten on the foot. The injuries were non-life-threatening, according to Volusia County Beach Safety.

Despite the stats, local pride remains high — with community events turning fear into fascination and fostering respect for ocean predators.
