Sheesh Mahal Scandal: Alka Lamba Targets Kejriwal Over ₹33 Crore Renovation Allegations

Congress leader Alka Lamba criticizes Arvind Kejriwal for alleged misuse of taxpayers’ money on luxurious renovations amid the pandemic, demanding accountability ahead of Delhi Assembly Elections.

New Delhi, January 5: Congress leader and Delhi Assembly election candidate Alka Lamba launched a scathing attack on Arvind Kejriwal, accusing the former Delhi Chief Minister of spending ₹33 crores of taxpayers’ money on lavish renovations of his official residence during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The controversy, often referred to as the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ scandal, revolves around allegations of extravagant expenditures on luxurious carpets, curtains, opulent toilets, and even a swimming pool at the CM’s official residence on Flagstaff Road.

Addressing the media, Alka Lamba questioned Kejriwal’s integrity, reminding voters of his earlier promises of living a simple life without the perks of a bungalow, official cars, or heavy security.

“The so-called ‘aam aadmi’ Chief Minister, who vowed to live without luxuries, allegedly spent ₹33 crores of public funds on his personal comforts. At a time when citizens were battling inflation and economic hardships during the pandemic, such expenses are unacceptable,” said Lamba.

She further highlighted the findings of an audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which reportedly raised concerns over the expenditure. Lamba urged Kejriwal to come clean and clarify the rationale behind such lavish spending.

“This money could have been better utilized to support women and families struggling with inflation. The audit findings demand transparency, and Kejriwal owes answers to the people of Delhi,” she added.

The controversy resurfaces just weeks before the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections, where Alka Lamba is set to contest against AAP leader Atishi from the Kalkaji constituency.

Arvind Kejriwal, who resigned as Delhi Chief Minister in September 2024 and vacated his official residence in October 2024, has yet to formally respond to these allegations.

The Delhi Assembly Elections, anticipated to be a high-stakes political showdown, are expected to be officially announced soon.
