“Should Have Called Himself King”: Imran Khan Blasts Gen Munir After Field Marshal Promotion

In a fiery statement from jail, former PM Imran Khan denounces Pakistan’s political and military establishment, saying the country is now ruled by “jungle law” under the army chief.

May 23, 2025: Jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan launched a blistering attack on Army Chief General Asim Munir on Thursday, mocking his recent elevation to Field Marshal — a title he said should have been “King” instead, given what he described as Pakistan’s descent into “jungle law.”

“MashaAllah, General Asim Munir has been made Field Marshal. Though frankly, it might have been more fitting to give him the title of ‘King’ instead — because right now, the country is ruled by the law of the jungle,” Khan posted on X.

Gen Munir was elevated to Field Marshal this week for his role in Pakistan’s response to the India-Pakistan conflict, becoming the second military officer in Pakistan’s history to hold the prestigious rank.

Khan Rejects ‘Deal’ Rumours, Invites Talks

From behind bars, Khan denied any backroom deals for his release, calling such speculation “baseless lies,” but extended an open invitation to the military for dialogue.

“If the establishment truly cares about Pakistan’s future, come forward and talk. I’ve never asked for anything for myself, nor will I now,” he said.

Warnings on India, Criticism of Judiciary

Imran also warned the Shehbaz Sharif government of the possibility of another attack from India and urged readiness.

Calling Pakistan a nation where “law only applies to the weak”, he cited ongoing cases against opposition figures being ignored while those against him were fast-tracked.

“When you send the message that the bigger the thief, the higher the office they’ll hold — you bury justice,” Khan added, citing President Asif Zardari’s sister and PM Shehbaz Sharif as examples.

Allegations of Injustice in Jail

He also detailed alleged mistreatment in jail, including denial of access to lawyers, books, medical care, and even contact with his children.

“Even my court hearings are dictated by a colonel. This is the death of democracy,” he said.

Drone Strikes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khan further condemned alleged drone attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and asked the provincial government to file an official protest.

“Killing civilians doesn’t end terrorism; it fuels it. We had stopped American drone operations after years of struggle — now bombs are falling on our own people,” he warned.
