Shubman Gill Sweats It Out in Mohali to Regain Form Ahead of England ODIs

Struggling in red-ball cricket, Gill turns to domestic cricket to rebuild confidence as he prepares for India’s ODI series against England.

Mohali, January 30: India’s rising star Shubman Gill is putting in extra hours at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) in Mohali, working on his technique and form ahead of India’s three-match ODI series against England.

Despite being one of India’s brightest batting talents, Gill’s struggles in red-ball cricket have raised concerns. Since his breakout performance in the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the 22-year-old has failed to register a fifty-plus score outside Asia in Test cricket. His most recent BGT series in Australia ended in disappointment, scoring just 93 runs in three Tests at an average of 18.60.

With the BCCI enforcing new guidelines requiring players to participate in domestic cricket, Gill returned to Punjab’s Ranji Trophy squad in an effort to regain his lost touch.

Ranji Trophy Performance: A Tale of Two Innings

Gill led Punjab against Karnataka but had mixed fortunes in the match:

🔹 First Innings: 4 runs – Dismissed early by Abhilash Shetty, as Punjab collapsed for 55 all out.
🔹 Second Innings: 102 off 171 balls – A fighting knock that included 14 fours and 3 sixes, though Punjab still suffered a massive defeat by an innings and 207 runs.

Even with his century, Gill couldn’t salvage the match for Punjab, but his efforts showed glimpses of his resilience and class.

Gearing Up for England ODIs & Champions Trophy

With the ODI series against England beginning on February 6 in Nagpur, Gill is expected to play a crucial role as vice-captain under Rohit Sharma. He will also serve as India’s deputy in the upcoming Champions Trophy, making his return to form all the more crucial for India’s white-ball plans.

With intense training sessions in Mohali, Gill looks determined to silence critics and reclaim his dominance in international cricket. Will he rise to the occasion in the ODIs against England? Only time will tell. 🚀
