Shubman Gill’s Admission Leaves Selectors Worried

Shubman Gill’s Admission Leaves Selectors Worried Opens Up About Red-Ball Cricket Challenges After Ranji Trophy Century”

January 26, 2025: Shubman Gill, India’s rising cricket star, has revealed a persistent issue in his red-ball cricket game—losing focus after scoring 25-30 runs. This candid admission came after he scored a valiant century in Punjab’s second innings during their Ranji Trophy clash against Karnataka. Despite his 102-run effort, Punjab suffered a crushing defeat by an innings and 207 runs.

Gill’s reflections on his form come in the wake of his underwhelming performance during India’s Test series in Australia, where he managed just 93 runs in six innings at an average of 18.60. Addressing his struggles, Gill stated, “I feel that sometimes I put undue pressure on myself to score big runs once I get set, and that affects my concentration.”

The stylish batter explained how staying involved in the game helps bring out the best in him, but maintaining focus at crucial moments remains a challenge. “I thrive when I am constantly involved in the game, but sometimes I lose that focus in critical moments,” Gill admitted.

Reflecting on his Ranji Trophy innings, Gill described it as “satisfying” after being dismissed cheaply in the first innings. He elaborated, “The first 40 runs came in about 130 balls as the bowlers were getting some help from the wicket. Post-lunch, I decided to play my shots, especially since wickets were falling at the other end.”

The batter also emphasized the importance of match practice over mere training sessions. “No matter how much you practice, the challenges you face in competitive matches are unparalleled,” he said, adding that playing domestic matches during breaks between international series can be invaluable.

Gill noted that the wicket in this match was similar to the one used in the Test against New Zealand three months ago, with the pitch conditions becoming more favorable for batting in the second innings.

The Punjab opener’s admission sheds light on the mental aspects of cricket that even top players grapple with. His efforts to overcome these challenges are a testament to his commitment to mastering the red-ball format and becoming a more consistent performer at the highest level.
