Siraj Breaks His Silence On Sledging Incident With Head At Adelaide During 2nd Test

December 8, 2024: The sledging incident between Australian batter Travis Head and Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj during the second Test at Adelaide has been cleared up, with both players providing their versions of the exchange. The incident, which added an emotional and dramatic element to the hotly-contested Border-Gavaskar Trophy, initially caused some tension, but both players have since moved past it.

The drama unfolded when Siraj dismissed Head with a sharp delivery, triggering an aggressive send-off from the Indian pacer. As Siraj celebrated, he pointed towards the Australian sheds, prompting a response from Head, who fired back with some words of his own. The crowd, particularly the Australian fans, heavily booed Siraj after Head’s dismissal.

During the post-day press conference, Head explained that his comments towards Siraj were meant to be light-hearted. “I actually jokingly said ‘well bowled,’ then he pointed me in the sheds and I had my reaction as well,” Head said. He admitted that the exchange had “probably gone a little bit far,” and although he regretted his own reaction, he added that he was standing up for himself in the moment.

Head also expressed his surprise at Siraj’s reaction, especially given the situation in the game. “There was no confrontation leading up to it,” he said, indicating that the situation escalated more than he had anticipated. While acknowledging that his reaction was less than ideal, Head emphasized that this kind of behavior was not the way he preferred to play the game, and he would have called out such behavior from his teammates.

The following day, Siraj responded to the comments during an interview with Star Sports. He vehemently denied saying anything to Head during the celebration. “I only celebrated at the start. I didn’t say anything to him,” Siraj explained. He also accused Head of not being truthful in the press conference, stating, “What he said in the press conference was not right. It is a lie that he only said, ‘Well bowled,’ to me.” Siraj defended his own actions, emphasizing that he had only celebrated the wicket and had not shown any disrespect. “We respect everyone. It is not like we disrespect other players. I respect everybody because cricket is a gentleman’s game,” Siraj said, adding that Head’s behavior was not acceptable in his view.

Despite the tension, Head later confirmed that the two had cleared the air when Siraj came out to bat on day three of the match. “Sweet with it,” Head said, indicating that they had resolved any issues. “He came out and just said [it was] a little bit of misunderstanding … I think we will move on. We have had a great week, so let us not let it ruin it.” Head also mentioned that Siraj had asked him why he swore, to which Head admitted he had responded in kind. However, Head seemed to take it in stride, adding, “I probably could have laughed it off and walked off and enjoyed myself.”

The pair’s conversation seemed to settle any lingering animosity, with Head concluding that there were no hard feelings. “It was fine. He just said it was a misunderstanding as well, and there were no issues for me. We move on. I’m sweet. It is what it is,” he said.

Ultimately, what started as a heated on-field exchange appears to have been resolved amicably, with both players choosing to move on from the incident and focus on the remainder of the series.
