Former cricketer believes Yashasvi Jaiswal will return stronger after missing out on India’s playing XI
New Delhi, February 26: Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes that Yashasvi Jaiswal’s exclusion from India’s playing XI in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy could actually benefit the young batter by fueling his hunger to perform.
“Sometimes, when you sit out, it increases a player’s hunger. I think Yashasvi will be even more determined when he gets his next opportunity,” Jaffer told ANI during the India Corporate T20 Bash league event.
Jaiswal’s ODI Struggles and Gill’s Dominance
Despite making waves in Test cricket, Jaiswal has struggled to cement his place in India’s ODI setup. He was initially named in India’s provisional 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy but was later replaced by mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy in a last-minute switch.
With Shubman Gill excelling in the opening slot, Jaiswal has found limited opportunities in ODIs. Gill’s stunning form—259 runs in the ODI series against England and a century (101) against Bangladesh* in the Champions Trophy—has further solidified his place as India’s first-choice opener.
In contrast, Jaiswal struggled in his only ODI appearance during the England series, scoring just 15 runs off 22 balls, despite taking a brilliant catch in the field.
“Shubman is the vice-captain and in great form. While Jaiswal must be eager to play, the team needs to have space for him,” Jaffer explained.
Jaffer on Rohit-Virat’s Future in International Cricket
Jaffer also weighed in on the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, whose Test performances in Australia sparked debates about their longevity.
“We can’t decide for them. They will decide their future. As long as their form and fitness are good, they should continue playing,” he said, dismissing concerns over their age.
With India aiming for an ICC title, all eyes remain on team selection and whether Jaiswal can force his way back into the playing XI.
