Smriti Mandhana Crosses 4,000 ODI Runs as India Clinches Victory Over Ireland

Smriti Mandhana’s explosive innings propels India to a six-wicket victory, as she joins Mithali Raj in the elite 4,000-run club in women’s ODIs.

Rajkot (Gujarat), January 10: Smriti Mandhana achieved a remarkable milestone in Indian cricket, becoming only the second Indian woman to surpass 4,000 runs in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). Her commanding performance, scoring 41 off 29 balls, played a crucial role in India’s six-wicket win against Ireland in the first ODI in Rajkot.

At 28, Mandhana now boasts an impressive 4,001 runs in 95 ODIs, with an average of 44.95 and a strike rate of 85.69. She follows in the footsteps of the legendary Mithali Raj, who amassed 7,805 runs at an average of 50.68 in her illustrious career.

A Captain’s Knock and Tactical Brilliance

With regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur rested, Mandhana took on the captaincy responsibilities, seamlessly balancing her leadership duties with an explosive batting display. India restricted Ireland to 238/7, thanks to Mandhana’s adept rotation of bowlers.

Chasing a target of 239, Mandhana led from the front, unleashing a flurry of aggressive strokes during the powerplay. Partnering with Pratika Rawal, she set the tone early, guiding India to 70 runs in the first 10 overs.

In a standout 8th over, Mandhana showcased her power-hitting skills against Georgina Dempsey, smashing a half-volley for four, a full toss for a six, and another full toss for a boundary. Her quickfire innings ended on a high note, although she fell prey to a thick edge on the final ball of the powerplay.

India’s Comprehensive Victory

Following Mandhana’s dismissal, Pratika Rawal (89) and Tejal Hasabnis (53*) carried the momentum, securing the target with over 15 overs to spare. The dominant win demonstrated India’s depth and intent as they continue to shine in women’s cricket.

Smriti Mandhana’s achievement is a testament to her consistency and aggression at the top of the order, further cementing her status as a modern great in women’s cricket.
