“Strong Country, Weak Reaction”: Zelensky Slams US Response After Russian Attack on Hometown

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticizes the US for a muted response following a Russian missile and drone strike that killed 19, including nine children, in Kryvyi Rih.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly condemned the United States for what he called a “weak reaction” to a deadly Russian missile and drone attack on his hometown, Kryvyi Rih. The strike, which killed 19 people — including nine children — and injured over 50, has sparked renewed tension between Kyiv and its Western allies over the pace and tone of their support.

In a strongly-worded social media post, Zelensky accused the US of avoiding direct condemnation of Russia. “Such a strong country, such a strong people – and such a weak reaction,” he wrote, expressing disbelief that the US Embassy failed to even mention Russia as the aggressor.

“They are even afraid to say the word ‘Russian’ when talking about the missile that killed children,” he added, urging the international community to show greater resolve in the face of continued Russian aggression.

US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink had earlier posted on X, saying, “Horrified that tonight a ballistic missile struck near a playground and restaurant in Kryvyi Rih. More than 50 people injured and 16 killed, including 6 children. This is why the war must end.” However, Zelensky felt the lack of direct attribution to Russia diluted the condemnation.

Calling for stronger global action, Zelensky stressed that peace can only come by “putting pressure on Russia,” whom he blames for continuing the war and ignoring ceasefire proposals. “We must not be afraid to call a spade a spade,” he said.

In a sign of continuing European support, UK Chief of Defence Staff Sir Tony Radakin and French General Thierry Burkhard met with Zelensky in Kyiv, reaffirming their commitment to Ukraine’s long-term security.

Meanwhile, Ukraine responded with a counterattack of its own, targeting an explosives plant in Russia’s Samara region with drones, signaling its readiness to strike back decisively.
