Stuart Broad Compares Mitchell Johnson With England’s Debutant Josh Hull

Stuart Broad’s comparison of Josh Hull to Australia’s Mitchell Johnson is a significant compliment, particularly because Johnson was one of the most feared fast bowlers in modern cricket due to his raw pace, slingy action, and ability to swing the ball.

Broad’s insight emphasizes Hull’s unique bowling attributes, particularly his slingy arm action, which can make him effective in swinging the ball, much like Johnson did during his career.

Broad’s remarks about Hull’s potential to evolve are intriguing. At just 20 years old and standing 6’7″, Hull has the physical tools to generate bounce and make life difficult for batters. Broad noted that although Hull’s current average pace of 83 mph is suitable for Test cricket, his speed will likely increase as he matures and refines his bowling technique. Additionally, Broad pointed out Hull’s alignment and his ability to swing the ball back into right-handed batters, two key aspects of his bowling that suggest a bright future.

While Hull’s debut saw him take his first Test wicket, it also came with a low point when he dropped a catch. However, this is a part of the learning curve for a young cricketer, and Hull will have opportunities to improve.

Replacing Matthew Potts in the final Test against Sri Lanka, Hull has already impressed in England’s domestic circuit, and with time, he could become a major asset for England. Broad’s observation that Hull’s action may limit bounce but could lead to skidding deliveries adds an interesting tactical element to his game. If Hull can harness his height and refine his run-up, as Broad suggested, he could develop into a more versatile and dangerous bowler in the future.
